Captive Lunacy

The lady lifts
Her languid hand
And sets the moon adrift.

She does not care
For patterns,
Just a swift
Fleeting nocturne
Swirling in the shuttered air.

Her touch a mere caress,
a finger’s breath of time,
a lush swirl of spare
Feelings used to lift
A dismal crescent to new heights
Of slightly stilted madness
Through a softly pulsing rhyme.

The moon was setting this morning when I went to work, a cue ball sinking into pastel clouds of baby pink and blue, rising and dipping in the curve of the mountains.

The moon was rising when I came home from work, a huge yellow ball, slipping in and out of clouds and trees and darkness.  We played, the moon and I.  It filled the windshields of the cars in front of me, and led me down a different road as I tried to catch up to it. I wanted to drive all the way into it, wrap myself up in it, sway and dance in its curves and light.

But I couldn’t quite reach it.

It made me smile to try.

Phases of the Moon
Once upon a time I heard
That the flying moon was a Phoenix bird;
Thus she sails through windy skies,
Thus in the willow’s arms she lies;
Turn to the East or turn to the West
In many trees she makes her nest.
When she’s but a pearly thread
Look among birch leaves overhead;
When she dies in yellow smoke
Look in a thunder-smitten oak;
But in May when the moon is full,
Bright as water and white as wool,
Look for her where she loves to be,
Asleep in a high magnolia tree.

Is it the sun? Or the moon?  You be the judge, because it’s whatever you think you see.  And I’ll never tell….

Daily gratitudes:
The way dogs’ jowls flap in the breeze when they stick their heads out of moving car windows
The lady so moved by the spirit of gospel that she was singing and dancing in her car this morning
How tolerant MKL is of ring shopping

I woke at 1:30 this morning.  The moon was so bright that it was casting huge shadows across my bed.

For those of you who remember my post about which side of the bed you sleep on, you’ll be interested to know that I’m branching out.  Maybe because my hot flashes are playing like a baby at night.  My bed has grown extra pillows somehow, and when I’m too hot, I find myself throwing off the covers, flinging myself sideways, and using the multitude of pillows as surrogate blankets.  I’m strangely padded by cool sheets and pillowcases until I get too cold, then rearrange myself in a more normal and customary position.

Last night though, when I awoke, I wasn’t unhappy about it – I was just awake.  I sat cross-legged on the bed for a while, letting the shadows play across my skin.  I even tried to take pictures, but I doubt they came out.  It was magical – just me and the moon.  Moonlight must be good for you, just as sunlight is, but in a different way.  It provides you with “yin” energy, which increases serenity and sensitivity.  Unfortunately, it doesn’t spur you too much action.  Which kind of makes sense, since after all, it IS the middle of the night and you ARE supposed to be sleeping.

Of course, Urban Dictionary also defines a moonbath as “farting under the full moon”.  That rather takes some of the bloom off the rose.

I think I’ll stick with my original definition.

It’s almost spring, which is wonderful.  Just to give you a quick update on where things stand (and remember it’s all about me today, so every sentence will start with “I”):

I am jumping through hoops for the house, and it’s still touch and go.  If I close, I close on Friday.  I haven’t said anything to my landlords yet, and will probably stay at the Cottage for a month longer as there is much to get done in the new house.  Which, by the way, needs a name.  Any ideas?

I continue to be frustrated by a temperamental hot water heater.  I DO NOT LIKE COLD SHOWERS IN THE MORNING.  Serious boo.

I still have not figured out how to juggle everything with this commute.  The Cottage needs cleaning, the recycle needs dropping off, the oil needs changing, the bank needs visiting, the taxes need to get to the accountant, my body needs working out.  I need some “me” time, other than on the bus, I need some Kelsea time, and I need some social life.  Hopefully, I’ll get the hang of this stuff soon.  Other people can do it – so can I!

I am thrilled that Spring is almost here.

I have this awful bruise on my arm that I have no idea how I got.  Why does that happen?

I love my job.  My brain is just so engaged all the time!  And I’m really improving my editing skills.

I dislike the fact that my landlords are running the sprinklers all the time.  It’s like walking through a downpour to get to the Cottage.

I am sad to report that my hot flashes are returning.  It seems that stress = hot flashes.

I am going to go find the spot to watch the Supermoon rise tonight.  I think I know just the place.  If any pictures come out, I’ll share them.

OK, it’s just a mini-one-night road trip, but still….yippee!

My last couple of mini-road trips haven’t been particularly stellar, due to my frame of mind.  But I’m optimistic for this one because, well, I’m just feeling more optimistic these days.  It was an impulse decision this morning to go away tomorrow to see something new and cool before I hit the cubicle next week.  It’s an Ice Festival up in the mountains in an old town that I’ve only driven through before.  (As you can see, I continue to try to embrace winter as fully as possible, for which I deserve a pat on the hand, or elsewhere if you choose.)  So look for a tale of adventure, woes, joys, villans, food, hidden treasure and old graves this weekend, complete with pictures.  I believe there’s internet at the reformed (wait, I mean remodeled) schoolhouse-turned-inn at which I am staying, just in case installments are necessary.

To whet your appetite, here are a couple of pictures from yesterday’s blister-inducing hike:

I have always loved travelling alone.  It is nice to remember what I have always loved.  It’s a challenge when you’ve shared so much of yourself and the things and places you love with someone you love who you don’t have anymore.  I was feeling so desperate for a while, thinking I could not return to those places, those activities without memories pulling too hard at my heart.  I am overcoming that little tiny bit by little tiny bit, and focusing on loving me, and remembering who I am at heart all by myself, remembering that the things I loved before I loved the man are still the things I love.  I just showed my love – and shared my love – by sharing them with him.  And sharing your love – and loving yourself –  is what life’s all about.

Time to sync up the iPod!  And to share with you the beautiful moonrise this evening…

Some Kiss We Want

There is some kiss we want
with our whole lives, the touch
of spirit on the body.  Seawater
begs the pearl to break its shell.
And the lily, how passionately
it needs some wild darling!
At night I open the window and ask
the moon to come and press its
face against mine.
Breathe into me.  Close
the language-door and open the love-window.
The moon won’t use the door,
only the window.

Natural Law

If you press a stone with your finger,
Sir Isaac Newton observed,
The finger is also
Pressed by the stone.
But can a woman, pressed by memory’s finger,
In the deep night, alone,
Of her softness move
The airy thing
That presses upon her
With the whole weight of love?  This
Sir Isaac said nothing of.
