Sometimes the light likes to play games…
Topsail Beach, North Carolina.
Quote of the Day: “When you encounter someone you were destined to meet the conversation will take flight as if it were on wings of angels, complete strangers confiding in each other as if you were lifelong friends.” – Kevin Hall
Daily gratitudes:
Wonderful books
My nieces
Walking
Jumani apples
False moons
It’s still brrrrrr here. Something like -12 with the wind chill. So we’re still hanging out on Anegada for the photo of the day. I guess I’m a little homesick.
Anegada, British Virgin Islands.
Quote of the day: “Grief is a most peculiar thing; we’re so helpless in the face of it. It’s like a window that will simply open of its own accord. The room grows cold, and we can do nothing but shiver. But it opens a little less each time, and a little less; and one day we wonder what has become of it.” – Arthur Golden
Daily gratitudes:
Geese, geese, geese
Iced green tea on an icy day
How my cold-spurred tears froze when they fell on my coat
Soft black leather boots
A shoulder to lean my head on waiting for the shuttle
If you walk south from Cow Wreck for a bit, you come to this bend in beach. It’s taken a beating from its open attitude to the sea, but it’s still lovely.
Anegada, British Virgin Islands.
Quote of the day: “Of course, if you’re hoping for a perfect world, you’re bound to be disappointed. But an interesting world–now that’s doable. It’s right here in front of you.” – George Hammond
Daily gratitudes:
That my 16-year old still wants to stay up until 2:00 a.m. talking to me
A tidier room – not quite done, but better
That the struggle with the Christmas tree is nearly over
My first exposure to Downton Abbey
My small painting from Paris
It’s 5 degrees here in Colorado this morning, and Kelsea and I are heading out to opening day of the National Western Stock Show (woot!). The Broncos are primed for today’s playoff game against the Ravens, and all is right with the world. Except for the fact that it’s 5 degrees outside, so let’s imagine we’re at Cow Wreck.

Quote of the day: “I believe in the baby Jesus, and I believe he is handsome and lives in the sky with his pet cow. I believe that it is essential the cow like you, and if you pet the cow with your mind, it will lick your hand and give you cash. But if you make the cow angry, it will turn away from you, forget you exist, and your life will fall into shambles. I believe that as long as the cow likes you, you can get what you want. In order to keep the cow’s favor, you need to ‘let go and let God,’ meaning you can’t obsess about controlling every little thing. You have to let things unfold naturally, and not try to change things you cannot change. On the other hand, I believe that if you’ve made the cow happy by living this way, you’re allowed to ask for favors…” – Augusten Burroughs

Quote of the day: “The winter will be long and bleak. Nature has a dismal aspect.” — Charles Nodier
Daily gratitudes:
The Stock Show parade today (and yes, there are pictures!)
MKL
Julayne, the best boss in the world
Bed tonight
The V of flying geese, so many, each twilight
Today’s guest poet: W.B. Yeats
A Crazed Girl
That crazed girl improvising her music.
Her poetry, dancing upon the shore,
Her soul in division from itself
Climbing, falling She knew not where,
Hiding amid the cargo of a steamship,
Her knee-cap broken, that girl I declare
A beautiful lofty thing, or a thing
Heroically lost, heroically found.
No matter what disaster occurred
She stood in desperate music wound,
Wound, wound, and she made in her triumph
Where the bales and the baskets lay
No common intelligible sound
But sang, ‘O sea-starved, hungry sea.”
I have been sick for what seems like forever. At first it was a horrible cough, which I worked through until yesterday, when I was so sick I couldn’t work. I was still too sick to work today. My darling MKL came to visit tonight and brought me two perfect early Christmas presents to make me feel better – even though just seeing him was enough. At any rate, this picture, or any picture of Anegada, is a tonic for my sick and tired spirit. Sorry for the slightly crooked horizon, and I promise I’ll be back to my merry Santa-hat-wearing, holiday-loving self before Christmas.
Pomato Point, Anegada, British Virgin Islands.

I thought it was time that we remembered the beach. It’s been several months since I’ve seen one. and will be several months still. But hopefully in February, we’ll be off to somewhere new. I am thankful that it has been such lovely weather, as usually it’s cold and snowy by now, and yesterday was almost shorts weather.
